On Thursday the 7th of May 2009, week 3, we were back at St Augutines Primary school to teach science. This weeks experiemnt was on "contructing an astrolabe". The experiement was to provide understanding and knowledge to students on what "angles" are.

Students were able to use this experiement on measuring the angle of distance from where they are and the light above them for instance. By constructing this experiemnt with the students, as a result, students were able interpret what angles are through a class discussion and through a game called "Professor saids".

Constructing a spectroscope

Constructing a spectroscope

On Thursday the 30th of April 2009, we were back at St. Augutine's Primary School to teach the students science. This week's experiment was on "Constructing a spectroscope".
The students showed some understanding of what light energy is through a class discussion. They were able to work well amonst theremselves and as a group. As part of Professor Science show and as a student teacher, i found that some students don't read the instructions and depend on teachers to do their work for them. I appoached this issue by sitting down with the student(s) and went through the instructions step by step at a time. As a result, the students were able to read the instructions and build the experiment themself.
The experiment of the explosion using liquid nitrogen was a great experience for the students and teachers. Judging from the facial reactions and from the amount of loud noises the students were making, i'd say they had a terrific time.
I have learnt that it is important to explain the intructions specifically and question the students to test their understanding.

Professor Science show - St Augustine's School.

Professor Science show at St Augustine's primary school

On the 23rd of April 2009, as part of my course of Bachelor of Education, my peers and I contributed in a Professor Science show. We attended to St Augustines's primary school for the first time to introduce ourselves and provide the students with a quick rundown of the experiments that we were going to do for the next 5 weeks.
The peers in my group are Peter, Sokunthea, Nicole and I. we were put into a class of grade 2's and 3's, which i found comfortable and esay to interact with the students.
While we were there providing informations to the students, our role was to observe the students understanding and learning skills about science. The topic that was discussed was on "space". As a results, many students could provide facts about space. There was many intresting questions questioned by the students such as, how many minutes does it take to get to Mars?. It was a tough question and i was amazed how a young student could come up with such intresting yet hard to answer question.
According to my observation on the students understanding are that they're very bright, curious, excited about science and are intrested in learning.
Being able to be out in a primary school, teaching and interacting with the students is an amazing feeling. After returning back to the University, i had the energy and the enthusiasiam to focus on my task and homework. The students were adorable.
